Vegalta Sendai 2-1 Gamba Osaka
Gamba came close to going ahead just after the quarter of an hour mark when Hwang Ui-jo - surrounded by three defenders, with his back to goal - created space in the penalty area with a clever turn, but his right-footed shot was palmed away for a corner. Just after the half hour notch, though, Gamba did indeed take the lead as Kim Young-gwon headed home a corner to give the away team the start. Moments later Ademilson saw his left foot shot deflected for a corner as Gamba looked to increase the gap but it was the home team that scored next as a speculative shot from 25 yards out was deflected past his own 'keeper by Genta Miura to see the teams going in level at the break.
It was all Gamba as the second period began and Ademilson and Hwang combined well at close quarters after good work from Shu Kurata down the left, but the Korean's shot his the side netting. Oh Jae suk was next to try his luck for Gamba but his 20-yard shot flew just over the bar and, just as it seemed that Gamba had the upper hand and would be coming up with a point, and perhaps even disappointed with that, tragedy struck as Nagasawa slid in between two defenders to poke home from close range and give the home side the win.
