Yokohama F・Marinos 0-1 Gamba Osaka

With Urawa Reds losing in the Saitama Derby and Vissel Kobe going down at home to Ventforet Kofu, Gamba Osaka took full advantage of the situation, bringing home three points from this away trip to Yokohama. Once again, it was Ritsu Doan who scored the all-important goal!

There was some player rotation from Gamba manager Kenta Hasegawa, with Yasuhito Endo, Shun Nagasawa, Ryo Hatsuse and Ademilson rested. With Yasuyuki Konno and Hiroto Goya - among others - still out, the selected starting XI today showed the depth that Gamba have in reserve.

Early exchanges were limited, with Shuhei Akasaki getting on the end of a good Gamba move only to head wide while, at the other end Yuji Nakazawa saw a header comfortably taken by Gamba custodian Masaaki Higashiguchi.

Just before the break Takashi Kanai was caught with the ball as he tried to move out from defence, Akasaki's challenge setting Doan free but, as the youngster pulled the trigger, Nakazawa came in with the desperate block.

As the second period got into its stride Fabio saw a header from an inswinging corner go just past the unguarded far post, before - at the other end - a loose ball fell nicely for Manabu Saito. Higashiguchi was quick off the mark to deny the diminutive striker.

The action continued and just before the hour mark a Doan cross was almost finished off by Akasaki, who forced a fine point blank save from the 'keeper, while, a few minutes later Ademilson's acrobatic strike was straight at the lucky Hiroki Iikura.

The home goalkeeper was not so lucky in Gamba's next attack as Jungo Fujimoto and Hiroki Fujiharu combined to see the latter get a low front post cross in. As Iikura advanced to block Shun Nagasawa the big Gamba forward flicked the ball nonchalantly into the path of Doan, who slipped the ball into the unguarded net from close range!

The away team continued to create chances and spread play and should have doubled their lead and put the game to bed when Ademilson created an opening for Nagasawa. The Gamab number 20 slipped the ball past the 'keeper but it trickled past the post.

And so Gamba moved up into 2nd spot in J1, just a point behind Urawa Reds. Next up are Shimizu S-Pulse on Friday, before the all-important final match of the ACL's group stage next week. Two wins are prescribed!
