Gamba Osaka 1-1 Kawasaki Frontale

Gamba Osaka dropped two important points in their chase for the title in a game that was possibly overshadowed by the news that it was Ritsu Doan's last game for the club. The announcement that the diminutive Under-20 World Cup star was moving to Holland's Groningen came suddenly, and the fans had just this chance to say goodbye.

Giving Doan his final start for the team in this match, Kenta Hasegawa seemed to have done the right thing when Doan took off on some mazy runs, creating space and causing havoc in the away defence and with all this Gamba pressure a goal seemed imminent, but it was Frontale who took the lead after the break... but we're getting ahead of the story!

Shu Kurata looked as if he was about to give Gamba the lead in the 13th minute after Doan had bamboozled his defenders, saw his shot blocked and the ball ricochet to Kurata, but the Gamba number 11's low shot was well saved by the 'keeper.

It was Doan feeding Kurata again just before the break, this time the ball flying just wide of the post as Gamba piled on the pressure.

Against the run of play, though, it was the away team who opened the scoring, in very fortunate circumstances, a low cross making its way across goal with Kengo Nakamura completely missing his shot, the ball was then rammed back across from the right, and finally Kengo Nakamura pinged it back in again, to see the ball ricochet home off Fabio's shin.

The away defence was probably happy to see Doan replaced by Ademilson in the 64th minute, while Jungo Fujimoto replaced Yasuhito Endo at the same time. Both substitutes made waves immediately with Fujimoto's pass finding Ademilson on the right. The tricky Brazilian advanced and took the ball inside the area, beat his man only to be taken down with a late tackle. Unbelievably, the referee gave no penalty kick, even though replays showed the defender was beaten with ease. Hard to believe, also, was that DAZN chose not to show the incident in their highlights package!

Gamba equalised soon after the referee's error when Kurata took a quick throw-in to Yosuke Ideguchi, who swung the ball in from the left wing and Shun Nagasawa was on the end of it to give the home team a deserved equaliser in the 68th minute.

Five minutes after their goal Gamba came close to taking the lead after a lovely passing move ended with Ademilson shooting into the side netting, the goalkeeper managing to get a hand to the ball (though a corner was not given!).

Gamba went for the win all the way until the final seconds of the match, with Ademilson and Yasuyuki Konno both seeing shots blocked in the final passage of play, but Frontale held on to take a point home!
