Gamba Osaka 1-4 Nagoya Grampus - Levain Cup, group stage

next
Gamba went down 4-1, at home, to this season's whipping boys in a shock defeat, as Nagoya Grampus suddenly found some goals, but Gamba had already done enough to qualify for the knockout stages and, perhaps, were not fully motivated!

Hiroto Natao opened the scoring for the away team before Shun Nagsawa added to the four goals he scored against Grampus last time the met in this competition to make it 1-1, and then Kenta Uchida regained the lead for the away team - all before the half hour was up.

Shunto Kodama added a third for a very weakened Nagoya team to give them a 3-1 half time lead.

Gamba manager Levir Culpi made changes for the second half, with Shu Kurata and Hwang Ui-jo replaced by teenagers Ryotaro Meshino and Keita Nakamura, while Yuto Mori also came on in the 70th minute, replacing JUngo Fujimoto, but the changes were to no avail as Uchida added another for Grampus just after the restart to end the scoring at 4-1 to the away team.

Never the less, Gamba had already qualified for the knockout stage of this competition and will meet Yokohama F•Marinos on a home and away basis on June 2nd (away) and June 9th, at home.
