The away team set up with a three man defence - Suganuma coming in to join the usual Fabio and Genta Miura centre backs, while Oh Jaesuk and Hiroki Fujiharu played wider and more forward, as wing backs today. Matheus lined up alongside Yasuyuki Konno in defensive midfield, while manager Levir Culpi went with three attacking players in Hwang Ui-jo, Yasuhito Endo and Shun Nagasawa.
The tactic worked for Gamba and the packed midfield and hard work of the Gamba players nullified any threat that the passing and possession tactics of the home team might have hoped for. Masaaki Higashiguichi had a couple of long range shots to save but nothing to write home about, although he did impress with a sliding tackle to deny Hugo Vieira any control of a long pass from his 'keeper just before half time. The match remained goalless at the break.
Fujimoto came on at half time to face his former team and soon made an impression when he scored that goal from his own half minutes after the restart! Just after the hour mark the home team equalised from a well-taken free kick by Jun Amano that his former team mate Shunsuke Nakamura would have been proud to call his own.
Shu Kurata then created space and the chance for himself in the 68th minute, with some superb control to leave his defender in the dust but his shot flew past a post but that was about as close as either team came to breaking the deadlock and Gamba could well call themselves disappointed not to have picked up the win!
