Gamba had started with an experienced team but at half time Naoya Senoo and Ryotaro Meshino took the places of Jungo Fujimoto and Hwang Ui-jo, as manager Levir Culpi persisted with his policy of blooding the youngsters this season. With five minutes to go and the game still goalless, Culpi then pulled Shun Nagasawa for the fresh 17-year-old Leita Nakamura, but it was Kazuki Iwamoto of Kwansei who gave his team the lead two minutes later.
With just moments to go in the 90 minutes Miura then grabbed his team what looked to be a face-saving equaliser and the game went into extra time. Just two minutes into the extended period Hiroto Yamami was given too much space on the left and cut inside onto his right foot to unleash a curling shot into the far corner. A goal to win a match - and it did. Yet another youngster came on in the 99th minute as Shu Kurata made way for Yuto Mori and Gamba finished the match 2-1 down and with four youngsters on the field. Perhaps the inexperience of the youngsters contributed to what can only be called a cup upset!
