The breakthrough for Gamba soon arrived, though, and it came directly from that high pressing game, with Shinya Yajima forcing the error of a defender in his own area, with the Gamba midfielder getting the ball to Shu Kurata, who slid the ball home with the goalkeeper helpless. 1-0 to Gamba, with less than six minutes gone.
Kim Young-gwon almost made it 2-0 when his header from an Usami corner in the 23rd minute hit the post with the 'keeper nowhere, a huge let off for the home team. Next to take a pot was Yosuke Ideguchi as Gamba forwards again pressed hard and caused an error, Ideguchi shooting from about 40 yards out after the 'keeper had lost the ball out on the touchline. Idegiuchi watched as Park Il-gyu scrambled back to tip the ball over for another Gamba corner. But once again, after a let-off for the home team a goal for Gamba soon followed, this time Masaaki Higashiguchi turning the unlikely provider of the impetus for the score! Gamba allowed the ball to fall back to their 'keeper and the F.Marinos defence charged out in unison to play their high line. Higashiguchi's long ball over the top saw Yajima charge through unseen and onside to take the ball forward, before he slotted it to the right and returned the favour of creating a goal for Kurata, who slid the ball through the defence from the edge of the area! Half time 2-0 up at the champions!
Gamba sat back a little more in the 2nd half as they looked to hold on to their lead but remained adventurous when they had the ball, soaking up more pressure and frustrating their hosts until a touch of magic from Marcos Junior on the turn gave the home team some hope. But it was not to be and Gamba held on for a very deserved 2-1 away victory to open their season in style!
