Before the game Kim Young-gwon celebrated his 100th J1 game with a small ceremony and he was joined in the back line, for the first time in a Gamba Osaka shirt, by Gen Shoji as Ryu Takao dropped to the bench from the Tsuneyasu Miyamoto's back three. Also celebrating pre-match were Yuji Ono - 150 J1 games - and the big one of the day, Yasuhito Endo, who was lauded for reaching the record 632 J1 games milestone on July 4th, against Cerezo Osaka.
As the game settled in Yokuke Ideguchi was the first to come close to opening the scoring with a shot from the edge of the area that flew just over in the 7th minute, Kosuke Onose and Ademilson combining well to create space for the shot. As the clock hit 20 minutes Onose - fast becoming a key weapon in Gamba's arsenal - sent in a deep swerving cross to the far post where Hiroki Fujiharu was on hand to turn it back into the centre, but Ono was foiled by some desperate defending.
Despite some dominance it took a little luck to finally get the breakthrough that Gamba deserved when Onose latched onto a pass across the edge of the penalty area from Ono to blast home first time. The ball took a deflection of Ademilson to fox the 'keeper, and as the players discussed who got the credit the goal was awarded to the diminutive Brazilian.
The 2nd half began with Gamba leading comfortably but looking for more goals but the score came at the other end when the unfortunate Fujiharu under-hit a back pass to Masaaki Higashiguchi. The Gamba 'keeper managed to rush out to smother the ball, but it somehow squirmed loose and into the path of Koki Saito who buried the equaliser past the helpless Shoji on the goal line and left the stadium in silence. An hour gone and the teams were level again. Manager Tsuneyasu Miyamoto responded by bringing on substitutes for Gamba - Patric and Shu Kurata in for Ono and Ademilson - and the home team went looking for that winner but before it came the home goal had a scare as Higashiguchi got down low to deal with a header that then escaped from his hand before being safely gathered!
Those substitutions for Gamba changed the game, of course, as these things often do and in the 83rd minute a right wing cross was powered home by the head of Patric for what everyone in the stadium presumed was the winner. but, no. The Assistant Referee had his flag up - correctly - for offside, and the burly Brazilian's bullet header was cancelled out. But there was to be a fairy tale ending for Patric, and Gamba, after all, as the big number 18 rose high at a corner in the 94th minute to power home and give his team a well-earned three points!
