Gamba Osaka 1-2 Sanfrecce Hiroshima

Gamba Osaka went down to another undeserved defeat - matching goal attempts and racking up 10 corners - as they succumbed to a set piece and then a quick counter-attack to concede two goals to Sanfrecce Hiroshima. Ichimi got on the score sheet for the home team but another game without points sees Gamba in a crisis. The club can only hope that some of their injured players are able to return to fortify the team soon.

Once again manager Tsuneyasu Miyomoto was forced to fill the full back positions with players who were out of position as Kohei Okuno was drafted in at right back and Keisuke Kurokawa got the start on the left. Kazunari Ichimi was given the shirt up front alongside Patric, and repaid that faith in him with his goal. Takashi Usami and Leandro Periera started on the bench.
Neither team showed much in the first half an hour but the game woke up after that with Masaaki Higashiguchi making fine save with his right foot to deny Junior Santos a goal before the home defence was breached. A in-swinging free kick came in from the left, Rhayner's body check on Gen Shoji went unpunished by the referee, and Sho Sasaki was free to head home from close range. Just as it looked as if the game would go in with the away team ahead at the break, in came Ichimi at the back post at a corner and his header went in off the 'keeper and the post - but he got the credit - and it was level at the break.
The 2nd half saw Gamba in a much better mood and Patric was denied from close range in the first 90 seconds after the restart as the home team looked as if they were finally going to score some goals this season. Sanfrecce had also woken up, though and Okuno was forced to block a shot to save his tea minutes later as both teams created chances.
Just after the hour mark Gamba sent in another corner that was cleared and quickly moved up field, Junior Santos - completely lacking a left foot, it seemed - sent a hopeful ball forward with the outside of his right boot and it fell into the path of the advancing Hayao Kawabe, who will probably not hit a sweeter strike this season. The proverbial goal out of nothing gave the away team the lead and they hung on to it to take the points.
