A completely changed Gamba Osaka took on Thai team Chiangrai United in the third Asian Champions League game of the 2021 campaign, and were found wanting, with the reserve squad left with only a single point to show for their efforts after an unfortunate last-gasp 95th-minute goal thwarted their efforts to take the win.
Unfortunately we also saw Yuji Ono substituted out of this game due to an injury, after waiting so long to return from a serious knee injury. He had caused early problems for the Thai team's defence before succumbing to injury in the 35th minute.
Gamba had chances from all over the field, Keisuke Kurokawa being denied a left foot strike in the 24th minute and then being squeezed out by the combined attention of a defender and the goalkeeper minutes before half time as he controlled a long pass and prepared to shoot. And so it stayed 0-0 at the break, but Leandro Pereira finally made the breakthrough for Gamba shortly after the restart, managing to get his left foot to a cross and force it past the (keeper to give his side the lead.
The 2nd half saw Chiangrai looking for an equaliser but being comfortably taken care of by Gamba's defence, but a second goal did not materialise for Gamba and they would live to regret it, as the pressure increased on their goal as the clock ran down. Another hopeful ball into the Gamba area was cleared, again, and sent back in, again, and, as the clock reached 94 minutes exactly, Kim Young-gwon mis-hit his attempted clearance to present an unmissable chance to Bill, who managed to steer the ball home to give his side an unexpected draw.
