Gamba Osaka 0-1 Kashima Antlers

next
Gamba Osaka finally got around to playing their scheduled second game of the season - matchday 2 - with, again six changes, as the squad was rotated again. With so many injuries to contend with, coupled with games coming in quick succession to make up for the lost month at the start of the campaign, Masanobu Matsunami's job was even harder than it would be for a normal manager!

The gam began in a positive manner for the home team with Gen Shoji getting on the end of a Yuki Yamamoto free kick in the 4th minute, with the goalkeeper beaten, but saw his header go just over the bar. 10 minutes later Gamba went close again as the pressing tactic stripped the ball from their opponents in midfield and Shinya Yajima saw Yuya Oki well off his line, but the Gamba midfielder's shot from close to the half way line was just wide as the 'keeper watched helplessly. The 1st half had been Gamba's with Masaaki Higashiguchi untroubled in goal, but the scores remained 0-0 at the break.

It took until the 51st minute for Higashiguchi to really be called upon and he was equal to a Juan Alano short, before Shunya Suganuma slid away the loose ball. The game was very even with Gamba still hopeful of getting the win when a midfield challenge failed to win the ball and the away team broke, with Arthur Caike taking the final ball in space and finding a way past the Gamba 'keeper to give his team the lead.

Matsunami now brought on Kazunari Ichimi and Wellington Silva for fresh legs up front, looking for a goal and the substitutes combined well minutes after coming on only to see Ichimi's close range shot saved well, and the Kosuke Onose and Patric denied space to follow up. And so a gallant attempt by the beleaguered men in blue and black was denied and Antlers took home the points.

Team - Higashiguchi, Miura, Shoji, Suganuma, Okuno (Onose, 61), Kurokawa, Yamamoto (Ju, 84), Yajima (Wellington Silva, 73), Kurata, Usami (Ichimi, 73), Leandro Pereira (Patric, 61)
