Gamba Osaka 2-3 Yokohama F.Marinos

next
A depleted - as usual in 2021 - Gamba Osaka gave their all in this game against the full-flowing might of Yokohama F.Marinos but came out of the game with nothing. Leandro Pereira headed against a post within 75 seconds of the start as Gamba turned it on from the opening whistle, but all three points ended up with the visitors.

While Gamba had good chunks of play and possession it was F.Marinos who took the lead just after the half-hour mark as Elber shot home from the edge of the area, through a forest of legs and in off the post. Luck was on the side of the away team today, it seemed.

It was 1-0 at the break and then the lead was doubled minutes after the restart as Gen Shoji slid in to make a routine clearance, but the ball bobbled unkindly for the defence and sat up nicely for a grateful Marcos Junior, who received his gift and finished off from close range.

The home team had the chance to get back into the game as the hour-mark approached, as Leandro Pereira danced between multiple defender, finally leaving Thiago Martins for dead, but the Brazilian defender took down his compatriot to give away the PK, which Leandro Pereira duly dispatched.

Lady Luck continued to smile on the visitors as Gamba grew more and more into the game and next it was Patric who was denied by the post after controlling a pass and taking out the defence in one movement to create space for the shot. The goalkeeper did well, and the ball ricocheted away off the inside of the post to leave the defence relieved. Again! And then, against the run of play, F.Marinos increased their lead with a close-range header (or maybe it would be kind to say it came of the head) by Kota Mizunuma that found its way in off the crossbar to give his team a 3-1 lead.

Patric did have the final word after converting a deft Takashi Usami lob to him at the far post, but it was not enough as gallant, injury-hit home team went down 3-2. With so many players missing in so many games this season, Wellington Silva was the next to join the queue for the treatment table. He will be out for at least one month.
