Yokohama FC 3-1 Gamba Osaka

A disappointing result after a very harsh red card for Yota Sato, when the score was still 0-0, saw the game change and gave a huge advantage to the home team. Gamba began with a three-back system. including Sato, alongside Genta Miura and Shunya Suganuma, as injuries continued to take their toll on the team. The red card did not help!

The game opened with each team looking for space and each having some possession, Yuji Ono the first to come close for Gamba, as he headed a right wing cross just over in the opening exchanges. The, in the 31st minute Tiago Alves ran on to a long clearance, headed into his path and his speed, and then the strength of the shot saw him do enough to get the ball into the net, but he was then judged to have been inches offside on the half way line. So, 0-0 it remained heading towards the break.

Then Maguinho did his part, running across Sato and hitting the ground to see the young Gamba defender sent off, as it was judged to be a chance to score - which was really stretching the Laws of the Game. To add insult to injury the free kick given was headed home to give Yokohama FC a half time 1-0 lead.

Gamba were back in the game minutes after the restart as Ono headed a half-cleared corner back across the goal and in at the far post. 1-1 and all to play for and Gamba's 10 men looked to be heading for a draw, or even a win as they played the game at their pace until 10 minutes to go when an unlucky double-ricochet between three Gamba defenders saw the ball drop invitingly for the shot and suddenly, against the run of play our heroes were 2-1 down! Still Gamba looked for goals and a point, at least, and, with minutes to go it was Suganuma's turn to have a goal disallowed for offside as he ran in behind the defence to head home brilliantly, only to see the flag go up.
Even then, deep into additional time, Miura thought he has earned his team a point with a superb header that was matched only by the brilliant save from Svend Brodersen in the Yokohama FC goal. And then, just to rub salt into the woulds of the home fans, Reo Yasunaga shot across the 'keeper to out the game beyond doubt. 3-1 it ended!
