Gamba Osaka 0-1 Cerezo Osaka

next
Gamba Osaka hosted their neighbours Cerezo Osaka in the 42nd Osaka Derby in the league and, despite having enough of the play and chances to take the points, they somehow succumbed to a 1-0 sucker punch and ended the game with nothing! Tiago Alves had a chance to open the scoring for Gamba about half way through the 1st half but saw his near-post blast saved by the 'keeper, and then the same player blasted a left foot free kick just over the bar from distance, as the hosts took the game to their visitors.

With Cerezo restricted to long range shots the game went in 0-0 at the break and looking just a matter of time before Gamba opened the scoring. But, just after half time, one of those long range shots somehow found its way in on, off the hands of Masaaki Higashiguchi and the post - the smallest of margins seeing the ball sneak in to give the away team the lead.

Gamba manager Masanobu Matsunami brought in Takashi Usami and youngster Hiroto Yamami to freshen up the attack and both players had their moments but could not help their team level the game, then came Patric - in for Leandro Pereira - and he too almost got the all-important goal, just failing to get enough on the ball on a low cross in the 83rd minute.

And so, Riku Matsuda's goal won the Osaka Derby in the league, as the clubs then prepared to go into a Levain Cup two-legged quarter-final in the coming week!

Team - Higashiguchi, Yanagisawa, Shoji, Kim, Fujiharu, Okuno (Ideguchi, 72), Yamamoto (Onose, 81), Yajima (Usami, 72), Kurata, Tiago Alves (Yamami, 60), Leandro Pereira (Patric, 72)
