Gamba Osaka 1-5 Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo

next
Gamba Osaka suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the J.League's most northern team, after a terrible defensive display in the 1st half, that saw them 3-0 down at half time. Things went from bad to worse immediately after the restart as the away team added a 4th goal - fortunately given as onside after a slight deflection off a defender. At 4-0 down, the team finally got into some sort of rhythm and could have pulled the game back within reach before a fortunate break against the run of play added the final nail in the coffin, But let's go back a little...

Once again, injuries had severely affected selection of the Gamba team, with Genta Miura and Gen Shoji missing in defence, and Yuki Ono and Yuya Fukuda, among others, still out in the attacking area of the team. Dai Tsukamoto was fit to be in the squad, and came on for the 2nd half.

Gamba were 1-0 down within five minutes as there was a lack of communication between defenders and the ball was given away, and the chance was converted by Yoshiaki Komai, though Masaaki Higashiguchi got a good hand to the ball. Gamba should have been level before 15 minutes was up when Wellington Silva somehow headed wide t the far post with an open goal to aim at, and the missed chanced would be remembered as it went from bad to worse for the home team, Lucas Fernandes fortunate to retain possession as defenders half-heartedly challenged, and then somehow the ball was in the net, prodded in from close range, 2-0!

Tomoki Takamine add the third goal for his team with a snap shot from close to 25 yards out that was unseen by the keeper, and it was 3-0 at half time.

Gamba made three changes at half time, with Ryu Takao, Yuki Yamamoto and Tsukamoto coming into the game but Gamba were 4-0 down within a minute of the restart - half-hearted defending and fortunate deflections combining to create the goal.

Despite being 4-0 down Gamba still tried to make a game of it and looked for goals, while managing to tighten things up at the back and, just after the hour mark Patric headed home a Takashi Usami cross to at least add a little pride to his won game today. As time ran out Gamba still looked for goals and Takao saw his shot denied by a fine save from the 'keeper as we entered the final 10 minutes. And then the defence collapsed again as an aimless ball was pumped up front by Consadole's midfield and Higashiguchi came well out to the left edge of his area, but did not get near the ball as Douglas Oliveira shot into an empty goal from out on the wing to complete the rout!
