Gamba Osaka 2-1 V・Varen Nagasaki

Gamba Osaka's penultimate J1 game for 2018, and their final home game brought them a ninth win in-a-row as Tsuneyasu Miyamoto's men continued to climb swiftly away from the lower reaches of J1. Goals from Kosuke Onose and Keito Nakamura brought maximum points, and maximum joy to the home crowd as they said thank you to their team for the campaign.

Gamba got in their groove early, with Nakamura letting fly with a left foot blast that missed the post by a yard or so before Onose was in the right place at the right time to finish off a four-pass quick break that saw Hwang Ui-jo slip the ball into his path for the right-footed finish in the 10th minute. Hwang was almost on the scoresheet himself four minutes before the break, sliding in to poke home a low Hiroki Fujiharu cross, only to see goalkeeper Kenta Tokushige make a brilliant save.

Gamba looked to be cruising and it seemed only a matter of time before they scored again, but a wicked bounce on a seemingly innocuous cross from the left saw Nakamura - working hard in defence today, too - mis-kick his clearance. The ball fell kindly to Ryutaro Iio at the far post, who made no mistake and did not waste this gift - 1-1 at the break.

Nakamura soon made up for his error with the go ahead goal 10 minutes after the restart, latching on to another save by Tokushige from a Kazuma Watanabe shot to make it 2-1 to the home team. Just after the hour mark it was the Gamba 'keeper going down low to his right to palm out a deflected shot to keep his team level, and then Juanma hit a post with a curling effort, although Masaaki Higashiguchi seemed to be in the right place and would have stopped it if needed.

After his first-ever league goal Nakamura had the bit between his teeth and almost had another with a curling effort that just missed the post with six minutes to go and so the score remained 2-1 and Gamba moved on to their ninth win in succession!
