Unfortunately for Watanabe, he was replaced in the 21st minute, after rolling his ankle five minutes before and Hwang made an earlier-than-expected appearance. Gamba's three back system had been controlling the match but neither side were really creating any real chances but the away team went ahead in fortunate circumstances when a cross came over and Masaaki Higashiguchi punched clear only to see the ball rebound in off the chest of Ado Onaiwu to give Trinita a very lucky lead. It appeared to be handball and was hotly contested by the Gamba players, and the studs were high and showing too, but the referee gave the goal and the game went in 1-0 to the away side at half time.
For the 2nd half, Miyamoto pulled off Tanaka and brought on Ademilson, moving to a back four and it proved to be a success as Gamba controlled the game even more in this period, although, in the end, after chances galore, had to settle for a draw and a fortunate deflection to beat an excellent goalkeeper today.
Hwang had chances down the left, while Kim Young-gwon's 67th minute header from a corner saw a world class stop from Shun Takagi in the away goal. Less than a minute later Kosuke Onose saw his volley blocked by a desperate defender as Gamba fans behind the goal probably began to think they were never going to score! But that goal did come, as Yasuhito Endo seemed to mis-kick a 25-yard volley from a badly-cleared defensive play. The Gamba legend's shot took a wicked deflection, however, and the gallant 'keeper was finally beaten.
In the end, although Gamba could have won by two or three goals, a draw was probably an acceptable result for the home team against the high-flying Oita Trinita!
