[Preview] Aiming for only the 10th star. Gamba goes head-to-head against their strongest rival to win.
Gamba has run full speed ahead along the long and arduous road of Asia. Carrying the hopes of former Head Coach Poyatos and teammates who were with the team until last season, Gamba fought in ACL2 and now faces the Saudi Arabian powerhouse, Al Nassr, in the final.
"The road to this point has been long and arduous. This is a historic moment for our club," said Head Coach Vising in a press conference the day before, and it's not just the team that's feeling those words, but the supporters as well. Gamba has toughly overcome the difficulties leading up to the final, including the grueling battles in the hot and humid climate of Thailand, the tough schedule with the Meiji Yasuda J1 J.LEAGUE 100 YEAR VISION LEAGUE, and the disappointment of players who were forced to withdraw due to unfortunate injuries.
As Nakatani stated in the press conference, "We're playing against a great opponent in a great stadium, so we want to give it our all," Gamba will face their strongest rival in this tournament.
Al Nassr boasts stars who have played for big European clubs, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, João Félix, and Sadio Mané, but the reliable Gamba players are not afraid; in fact, they've been looking forward to the final against Al Nassr.
With temperatures expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius at kickoff, it's a completely away game, and conceding the first goal is absolutely out of the question according to their game plan. "Honestly, I'm not scared," Nakatani said, but at the same time, "Since we're playing against them, it's my job to not let them get away with it," expressing his determination as the backline's bulwark.
On the other hand, for Gamba to win, it will be essential to break through the goal defended by Brazil national team GK. "Looking back at the path we've taken, we've shown our own style. Our opponents are a team full of big names, but we haven't forgotten our hunger," said Hummett, who is in charge of the front line, with conviction.
Even away from home, Gamba Osaka will stick to Vising's style of gegenpressing. When asked about their tactics at the press conference, Nakatani stated emphatically, "I think we're an attacking team, so we want to play aggressively."
Against Al Nassr's individual strengths, Gamba Osaka will display a sharp, integrated attack and defense, launching a powerful vertical attack. Leading this attack will undoubtedly be Yamashita, the "ACL 2-year veteran," who will be a weapon in breaking down Al Nassr's formidable backline. "I will play with confidence. I believe we will definitely have a chance, so please watch us." (Yamashita)
If we all work together to win the ball back and exploit any momentary lapse in Al Nasr's defense, we're sure to create scoring opportunities.
Like Gamba Osaka, Al Nassr also competes in the Saudi Professional League, and in their match against Al Hilal on May 13th, they conceded a goal in the final moments, postponing their championship hopes until the final matchday.
The team's Portuguese Head Coach, Jorge Jesus, is also a world-renowned coach, but Head Coach emphasized, "We have great players. But we're not just here; we're here to win."
With the hopes and prayers of everyone involved with Gamba in their hearts, Gamba will face the final battle. And of course, what awaits them at the end is their tenth championship.
