[Preview] Aiming for a third consecutive win at home. A win against Urawa gives momentum to the Asian competition.
After a break of about two weeks, Gamba returns to the battlefield.
Although the team struggled in the early part of August, facing a string of matches against teams using five defenders, they managed to come from behind to win two consecutive matches against Yokohama FC and Shonan. "The team has been in good form throughout, and against teams using five defenders, including the match against Machida, the players played well. I'm happy with the current state of the team," said Head Coach Poyatos, expressing satisfaction with the two consecutive come-from-behind victories.
Yamashita, who scored the winning goal in the match against Shonan, also analyzed the reason for the high number of goals scored, saying, "We've seen that each player has the ability to score back even if we concede a goal, and we're getting the ball in front of the goal more often."
However, at the same time, the team is not getting carried away with their winning streak and is keeping a close eye on their current situation. "Gamba right now is not a team that likes to exchange shots," says Fukuoka. "We are aiming to score goals while dominating the game and keep clean sheets."
Four days after the Urawa match, Gamba will compete in their first ACL2 match, and defensive stability will be essential. Head Coach Poyatos said, "I'm not satisfied with the number of goals we've conceded (defensively), and when it comes to winning the ball back, it's important that everyone works together, not just the back line."
In the match against Urawa, where we are aiming for our third consecutive win, we will need to first keep possession of the ball and break through the opponent's solid defense without fearing the opponent's counterattack.
"We want to push back with our attacks and force the opponent's front line into a defensive position" (Yamashita). Although Gamba managed to win the away game by a narrow margin of 1-0, they never went on the defensive and instead went for a head-on challenge. Humet is a perfect fit, and Hatsuse, who has an excellent kick, has also joined the team. And Alano, who scored the winning goal in the previous match, is also in good form, so all they need to do is show their supporters their strength in launching a variety of attacks.
Gamba has not been able to beat Urawa at Panasonic Stadium Suita since their victory in the 2016 season, but Humet is adamant that "we haven't beaten Urawa at home for a while, so we want to break that jinx."
Meanwhile, Urawa lost a close match to Kawasaki F in the quarterfinals of the J.LEAGUE YBC Levain CUP. This season, they are focusing on league matches, but they are currently in 7th place, seven points behind leaders Kyoto. Although the team is playing away from home, they will be aiming for victory. While their mainstay, Matheus Goncalve Savio(MATHEUS SAVIO), who has four goals and six assists, is suspended for this match, former Japan national team player Nakajima, who scored in both of the J.LEAGUE YBC Levain CUP quarterfinal matches, is in good form, and new signing Isaac Kiese Thelin, who played in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, is also a key player. Thelin scored his first goal in his debut match in the J.LEAGUE YBC Levain CUP quarterfinal, so they need to be careful.
"They will take advantage of any gaps," (Head Coach Poyatos) said, and Gamba will have to rely on their winning streak against Urawa. With their home fans on their side, they have won three games in a row, giving them momentum for ACL2.
