[Preview] The disappointment felt in the Osaka Derby will be shown in the results. Gamba will show their determination against Sapporo
"The night we lost the derby was really disappointing," said Head Coach Poyatos, while even the fighting general Nakatani confessed his true feelings about the bitter defeat in the Osaka derby, saying, "Emotionally, I was down."
Gamba lost the big game that was supposed to be the turning point for them, but both the manager and the players understand that there is no time to be down if they want to end the second year under Poyatos on a good note.
"We need to bring back the passion we had when we were good and the intensity we had before, and even though the schedule is tight, we need to show that" (Nakatani).
The match against Sapporo, which comes on a busy schedule with 2nd year of junior high school, will be a great opportunity for Gamba to show their rebound mentality in front of the home supporters who gather at every game, eagerly anticipating a victory.
"I think everyone was feeling ups and downs after losing such a big match as the derby, but we managed to switch gears over the past two days." Yamashita, who is in charge of stepping up the team's offense and defense because of the consecutive matches, spoke on behalf of the team's feelings.
Gamba is without a win in nine league games but is still in fifth place and just needs to get back on winning form.
Since the 21st season, the team has a poor record against Sapporo, with one win, two draws and four losses, and even since Head Coach Poyatos took over, they have only had one draw and two losses. However, Head Coach Poyatos expressed his caution, saying, "The opponent is in a good position, so it will be a tough and difficult match."
Sapporo was once in last place, but since August they have bounced back with four wins, two draws and two losses, and are currently in 19th place in the J1 league. They will likely come to win against Gamba away from home in order to stay in the J1 league.
It is true that Sapporo, who will be challenging intense local battles in a near one-to-one style on the entire court, is in a more advantageous position than Gamba due to the one-week interval, but Nakatani remains vigilant, saying, "We absolutely do not want to let the game unfold like the first half of the derby, so we have to win second balls and in close battles for the ball."
The most important thing is to be superior to Sapporo, who use an unconventional formation, in terms of ball control and switching, but "They are a dynamic opponent, so it is important to make good use of forward-facing players. And it will be important to get behind them," said Head Coach Poyatos, explaining the key points for beating Sapporo.
It is important not to be afraid of Sapporo's aggressive pressing, but we also want to find opportunities to win by adapting to the situation and not relying too much on passing the ball.
On the other hand, Sapporo has the second worst number of goals conceded in the league, but Osaki, who joined in June, is functioning well as a defensive midfielder, and since August, the three-back formation with Osaki at the center has shown a new level of stability. They have recorded shutout victories over Kawasaki F and Kyoto, and a scoreless draw against Machida. Suzuki, who is on loan from Gamba, cannot play this week due to contract issues, but with foreign FW such as new signings Jordi Santos and Amadou Bakayoko waiting in the wings, the attacking line is a force to be reckoned with.
"I really want to give our supporters a victory and I want a win that will allow us to take a step forward,"Head Coach Poyatos.
Now is the time for Gamba to show their resilience in front of supporters who believe in victory and a re-acceleration towards the end of the season.
