[Preview] The top teams are coming into view. Gamba accelerates further after capturing their fourth consecutive win against Hiroshima.
With only 2nd year of junior high school days left in between games, Gamba made it to Saitama Stadium and with a shot from Yamashita, they stopped Urawa, who were on a five-game winning streak, and achieved their first three-game winning streak of the season.
Despite the minimal margin of victory at 1-0, the team hardly gave Urawa any chances to score, and showed a unified defence. "It was a victory that really built confidence and trust. It proves that what we've been doing up until now has not been wrong, and it gives us more confidence than the three points," said Head Coach Poyatos, who has shown skillful management and strategy during the winning streak.
Gamba remains eight points behind leaders Kashima, but with the top teams firmly in their sights, they will be taking on Hiroshima with the momentum they are creating as a united team.
"The opponents we'll face in May will all be strong, so it's a matter of how many points we can accumulate without losing any," Nakatani said of the tough battles that await them, starting with the match against Hiroshima, but the first opponent they need to overcome is Hiroshima.
Although Hiroshima has played one game less, they still have the same number of points as Gamba with 23. After suffering their first four-game losing streak in six years, Hiroshima is currently on a winning streak and on the mend, but their strength cannot be underestimated.
"I believe the players will be able to judge where there is space, which is also my philosophy," said Head Coach Poyatos, but the current Gamba team is adept at exploiting the opponent's moves and weak points depending on the match. "We're seeing results, and we're making progress with long counterattacks from deep positions," said Nakatani, who is also pleased with the current variation in the game, with Humett positioned at the front line to improve his fit, but in any case, the key is to score the opening goal.
Gamba has won all seven games in which they have taken the lead this season, but Mitsuda, who has contributed to three consecutive wins since being deployed as a defensive midfielder, said, "It's best to finish off the game when you're in a good flow, but even if you don't finish off the game, we want to continue not to get impatient and not get beaten."
Hiroshima shows aggressive pressing, but Mitsuda, who is on loan from Hiroshima to Gamba, has already imagined how to beat them. "The one-on-one defensive ability of the three-back line is really one of the best in the J-League. It's about how much of a numerical advantage we can create against them" (Mitsuda).
We want to avoid careless forward rushing, move the ball tenaciously, and switch on with a single vertical pass to attack Hiroshima's final line.
Hiroshima, on the other hand, won the previous match against Shonan with a 1-0 victory. Germain, who joined this season, has the most goals for the team with 3, so of course they need to be wary of him, but shadow player Nakamura, who has 2 goals, is the player Gamba should be most wary of.
Hiroshima's guardian angel, Osako, is a classmate of Mitsuta's from their Hiroshima youth days, so "I'm aiming to score a goal for Gamba in every game because I haven't scored a single one yet. If I could score against Keisuke (Osako), who has been my classmate since high school, I'd be happy," said Mitsuta, who is full of motivation.
Hiroshima has a good record against Osako, with 2 wins and 1 draw in official matches last season, and the team will work together to continue their winning streak.
