Head Coach comments after the match
Head Coach Katanozaka: "It was the first game after the break against the league leaders, Marinos, and I think the players made a good challenge without being afraid of what they had prepared. We scored the opening goal early in the first half, and I don't think the content of the game was anything to look down on or be pessimistic about. However, the end result was a disappointing 1-2 come-from-behind defeat. I am very sorry and disappointed that we made the home team feel so frustrated, even though so many fans and supporters came to enjoy today's game. I think the players believed in what they were challenging and fought without giving up. However, we conceded two goals in the last five minutes, which was an issue for us, and I think our attitude after conceding goals and the power to get them back were not enough to compete with the league leaders, Marinos. I don't know what you all think, but in order to win in the league going forward, we really need more manpower with just the starting 11 players. And how much the substitute players and those who come on in the middle of the game can contribute to the team's victory, and whether they can run and fight for the players who have been fighting up until that point, I think these things will be very important from now on, so all the players will work hard and take on the challenge in the next league match against Sapporo and the away match against Oita in the EMPEROR'S CUP.
Q: "There was a lot of time to prepare, and in the interview the day before yesterday you said that the direction the team was aiming for had been sorted out to some extent, but was the style of aggressive defense shown today something that was shared during the break?"
Head Coach Katanozaka: "Regarding defense, I think it's very important to try to steal the ball in the opponent's territory, and I think that's what we're challenging ourselves with right now. The players all shared the desire to go for the ball from the front, so I tried to do that. However, there are certainly risks in going for the front, but we're trying while fully understanding those risks, and in fact today, we pressed from the front against the league leader Marinos, stole the ball, and scored a goal, and no matter what kind of goal it was, I thought it was a great goal, and I think it was a goal that was clearly aimed for. The challenge for the future will be how well we can keep that kind of defense up to the end without going over the 90 minutes, and I'm currently trying to do that, so I'm trying to raise the players' awareness, and as I said earlier, with only 11 players, it's impossible to maintain that intensity or aim until the end, so I want to play a game with that kind of high awareness and high intensity at a high tempo, including substitute players."
Q: "There were a few games where the intensity dropped from the first half to the second half of the season, and I think that's something Gamba has been working on. I think there's a higher risk in playing this type of football when you have that weakness. What do you think about that, Head Coach Katanosaka?"
Head Coach: "I think this team can play that kind of football, not only in the match against Marinos, but in the future, and I think we have the players who can do it, so I feel it's worth the challenge. And of course, from the front, as we saw today, Marinos is very good at moving the ball around, and there are risks involved. However, we are aware of those risks, and if the whole team has a common understanding of those risks, I think we can play good football, so I think that's the challenge. And as you just said, in terms of issues, it's not just about how long we can continue for 90 minutes, but I think it's important to be able to play for 90 minutes, and that's what I want to aim for, and if we can't, we can all do it together, including selecting substitutes. However, we don't just play defense for 90 minutes, so I think we still need to challenge ourselves in terms of moving the ball well, so I want to challenge myself to play with high intensity and high intensity on both offense and defense, and how much we can do."
Q: "Today, we scored the opening goal in an ideal way, and if Anderson PATRIC Aguiar Oliveira had scored the decisive goal after that, the game would have turned out very differently, but I think the first half was very good. Was the style of football that you used to attack from the front the direction that you arrived at after thinking that this was the best style of football for the current Gamba members, including the break?"
Head Coach Katanozaka: "As you said, I personally want to be aggressive in defense and steal the ball from the front, and I think we have players who can steal the ball, and even if we defend against Marinos by retreating, I think we will be passed around and there will be many dangerous situations, so I don't think there is a difference in strength in this J1 league. However, Marinos is in the top of the league, and they don't lose their intensity until the end, like today, and they have a lot of players with high intensity and quality. I feel that such differences are reflected in the current ranking and today's result, but I don't think that we couldn't do anything against the top-ranked Marinos at all, and in that kind of battle in the first half, if Pato (Anderson PATRIC Aguiar Oliveira) had been able to score that scoring opportunity, we could have taken a two-point lead at 2-0. And in the second half, we were able to create scoring opportunities from long throws, and if we had scored them, we may have been able to tie the game. I think this is a league where the smallest things can decide whether we get 1 point or 3 points, and I think there will be more games like that in the future, so I think it's important that we challenge ourselves to play games that are worthy of 3 points, and I will challenge myself with high intensity while asking the players to do the same.
Q: You mentioned substitute players when talking about defense earlier. I think you used up all your substitution slots early on today. After that, we had a player sent off, so did you want to take that risk into account and bring in fresh players quickly, and play a defensive game that goes forward?
Head Coach: "Yes, that's right. We were very aggressive in defence from the first half, and I thought it would be a high-intensity game, so I replaced players who looked tired with fresh players, but I wanted to keep the intensity up and play as much as possible according to our aim. That's why I think we made the substitutions earlier. However, I think it will be difficult for the substituted players to come on in the middle of the game, but if they don't show that kind of attitude, no matter how much they run, put in power, go for the defence, and go for the goal, it will be difficult to score against Marinos, and in the future, to turn the game around and get the three points from that situation. Looking at the players who played, I think the depth of the squad is very important, and I feel that unless we have players like that, it will be difficult to win."
Q: Among the substitutes, Kurata returned and Higashiguchi started and defended the goal. What is your assessment of that?
Head Coach: "It's been a long time since Higashi(Higashiguchi) and Aki (Kurata) last played a game, so I think they had a bit of a gap in their game sense. However, even in that situation, they took on the challenge. Especially Higashi, it's been half a year since he last played. He's had a hard time not being able to play since the opening game, but he's back on the Panasonic Stadium Suita Stadium pitch after a long time, and although he was a little offside at first, there were some dangerous moments, and I think that his match sense will gradually return along with his condition, and he will be able to play well again. I want them to improve in that area and compete with the other GK. As for Kurata, it's been a long time since he last played a game, so I think it was difficult for him to come on in the middle of the game, but he has a strong will as a captain, and I think he is a leader who will pull the team, and I think he will play in a way that will pull the team, so although I think his condition still needs some time to improve, I think he is a player who can contribute to the team, so I hope that he will be able to help us build a strong team, including those veteran players and other players, and I hope that he will continue to prepare well and try his best in the future."
