Cerezo Osaka 1-0 Gamba Osaka

Gamba headed to the other side of Osaka for their derby meeting with Cerezo Osaka, knowing that their record in these games had dipped severely in the last few meetings after a long, successful run over a decade or more. This was, however, to be another day of misery and another single goal defeat in J1 for Gamba. That goal came as early as the 8th minute, and in an unfortunate manner, as a through pass that seemed covered, bounced off the heel of Shiota Fukuoka and into the path of Leo Ceara who poked the free ball home for the lead that would prove to win the game.

Masaaki Higashiguchi was called upon to keep the score down in the 15th minute, saving low to his right while Capixaba had a header go just wide, but the Gamba 'keeper was on hand to ensure that the ball stayed out of the goal. At the other end Takashi Usami saw his shot inches wide of the post, also, as Gamba looked for a leveler before the break, but it didn't come and it was 1-0 to the home side at half time.

The 2nd half was much of the same, both teams having half chances but creating very little at either end, although Issam Jebali came close to salvaging a point in the final seconds, his bullet right-foot shot saved by Kim Jin-hyeon, to ensure Cerezo took the maximum points.

And so, the long-suffering fans witnessed another disappointment in a long and disappointing season for Gamba Osaka, and a loss for manager Daniel Poyatos immediately after it was announced he would be staying on into 2024.
