Ventforet Kofu 1-0 Gamba Osaka

Gamba Osaka probably said goodbye to their J1 championship hopes with an upset defeat at Ventforet Kofu. Manager Tatsuma Yoshida has a well-drilled defence that has conceded very few goals this season and the simple problem is that Gamba failed to pierce this backline. When the home team actually managed a rare goal (only their 11th this season) so late in the game it was too late to make any changes in formation or attitude to get back into it and the relegation-threatened Yamanashi team gained a valuable win.

Gamba also lost Jungo Fujimoto for at least the rest of the year as he was taken off with what turned put to be a serious knee injury just before the break.

There was not a lot of goalmouth action in the first half, Gamba seeing Shu Kurata shoot wide from the edge of the area just before the break, while Ui-jo Hwang had intercepted a midfield pass, turned and spotted the 'keeper off his line and shot optimistically - but high and wide - from close to the half way line.

On the stroke of 54 minutes Shun Nagasawa had the chance that really should have won the game as he found space to meet a curling Ademilson cross but headed wide from close range with the goal at his mercy.

Neither team had been troubling the goalkeepers but Masaru Matsuhashi forced a fine save from Masaaki Higashiguchi in the 59th minute after some good advantage from the referee.

Nagasawa wasted an almost carbon copy header in the 65th minute, this time from a Kurata cross as Gamba made the space but lacked the finishing. Gamba lived to regret wasting chances as Wilson punished them with a curling effort as he turned on to his right foot after cutting in from the left wing and led his team to their first win in 11 matches.
