The adventurous formation almost received dividend in the 5th minute as Gamba tore apart the right side of the home defence only to see Patric's shot blocked and then Usami's follow-up saved down low. The breakthrough for Gamba did eventually come in the 33rd minute when we saw, of all people, goalkeeper Masaaki Higashiguchi advance into midfield and then, instead of the usual slow build-up pass to, his defenders, he sent a long ball over the top for Ademilson to run on to, and slip past the helpless 'keeper.
The away team's lead did not last long, though, as Brazilian Serginho unleashed a rocket from just inside the box to give Higashiguchi no chance. 1-1 at the break.
The home team then took the lead in the 58th minute when Yuta Koike latched onto a half clearance and blasted a shot at the Gamba goal. With the ball going wide there seem no danger but Sho Ito stuck out a foot to divert it past Higashiguchi and give his team a 2-1 lead,
The deserved equaliser for Gamba came when Fukuda raced onto a ball into the box and was ready to unleash a shot when he was taken down from behind. A penalty was given and Patric did the rest to give his team a well-earned point. The final whistle went as Gamba attacked, looking for the win, when they really should have been looking to keep their point, perhaps, summing up Tsuneyasu Miyamoto's attitude to the game. Gamba were looking for the win. As it was, the game finished level and Gamba took their 5th draw running, and 8th in 12 games.
