Gamba Osaka 2-1 Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo

next
Gamba Osaka took their second successive 2-1 win in J1 to remain in pole position for a 2021 Asian Champions league place and, hopefully an appearance in the 100th Emperor's Cup semi-finals with a J1 second place finish (or better!).

Wearing their one-off limited game shirts the home team attacked early and in numbers, as expected and a fine deep cross from Takashi Usami saw Shu Kurata coming in at the far post for a volley that would have been a contender for goal of the season if it had gone in! Despite the good start it was Consadole who opened the scoring, in a very fortunate manner. as a weak shot from Douglas Oliveira somehow found its way through a forest of legs and Masaaki Higashiguchi in goal was fooled by the lack of pace, and, unsighted, allowed the ball to squirm through his hands and in for the lead.

Gamba were soon level, though, after a fine move on the left, involving Yuki Yamamoto, Yuya Fukuda and Takashi Usami saw the defence pulled out of position. Usami's pass across goal found Kazuma Watanabe who had two defenders on his back, the ball then moved into the patch of Yosuke Udeguchi, who took one touch to take out a defender and then slid the ball home. 1-1!

Ideguchi almost had another just before the half time whistle, seeing his left foot shot saved well, down low, after yet another superb move had split the away defence.

Minutes into the second half Consadole 'keeper Takanori Sugeno was his team's saviour again, blocking a point blank range shot from Kurata after the defence had been exposed by Gamba's slick passing yet again. The winning goal came, though, as Tsuneyasu Miyamoto made a triple substitution on the hour mark. The stadium announcer had not even finished announcing the changes when Patric got his head to a beautiful inswinging free kick from Yuki Yamamoto to guide the ball home

Masaaki Higashiguchi ensured the win with two relatively easy saves from Consadole attempts but the real drama came with minutes to go when a Consadole cross hit the woodwork, bounced on the line and Patric hooked the ball away to safety before anyone could get a finishing touch. Job done, 2-1, three points!
