Gamba met Thai qualifiers Chiangrai United for the second time in a matter of days and, for the second time, disappointed with a 1-1 draw and chances of qualifying took a huge hit, with four dropped points against this team.
The men in blue and black went a goal down as early as the 6th minute, conceding to Felipe, who chested a hopeful ball over the top well, and finished with a left foot shot across Masaaki Higashiguchi in the Gamba goal.
Shinya Yajima was everywhere today and, before eventually getting the equalising goal, had a headed chance from a Takashi Usami cross, which he saw go just wide, and then failed to connect cleanly to a Shuhei Kawasaki drilled ball, that looked easier to score than miss. Chances came and were spurned and, once again, Gamba would regret the missed opportunities.
Ironically, after his earlier chances, Yajima finally was credited for the goal that came, after a huge deflection to his cross/shot saw the 'keeper stranded and, in the end it was simple luck that gave Gamba their goal! Minutes after the goal it was Yajima yet again with a chance to add to his tally, getting on the end of a Keisuke Kurokawa cross but heading over from close range.
Gamba continued to look for the winner... an Usami free kick was inches over as we approached 90 minutes, and then Yosuke Ideguchi's fine shot from the edge of the area was met with an equally fine save by the 'keeper, who then added another denial, down to his right-hand post with seconds to go and Genta Miura came up into the attack and saw his fine header scrambled away and the scores stay equal at the final whistle.
