It was a close game with both teams hesitant to commit in the early stages but Patric opened up the game with a stab-in from close range after a curling, in-swinging Wellington Silva cross found him unmarked and in space in front of the goal. 19 minutes and Gamba were ahead!
The home crowd was silenced just minutes later, though, when Douglas leveled his team with a header from a corner and it was 1-1, the Brazilian powering home a corner from former Gamba favourite Ryo Hatsuse.
The home team continued to press forward now, looking for another go-ahead goal and Ju Se-jong was denied by a fine save down low on the half-hour mark and the ball was in the Gamba net just a minute later, as a quick break down the right saw the cross come in and Junya Tanaka give his team the lead. Masaaki Higashiguchi then saved his team going further down with a fine save, low to his left to keep the score at 2-1 to Vissel Kobe at the break.
The 2nd half saw Gamba looking for the equaliser and Vissel soaking everything up that was thrown at them, although Patric almost made them pay with a blast against the crossbar in the 84th minute, and then, with the last kick of the game, Takashi Usami's right foot shot flew inches wide of the post so the game end with a loss for the home tea.
