Gamba Osaka 0-0 FC Tokyo

Gamba Osaka began this game with their three first-choice centre backs playing together - an unusual sight this season - and Kosuke Onose and Hiroki Fujiharu attacking down the wings. Shu Kurata was given the job of defensive midfield, alongside the ever-improving Yuki Yamamoto as the home team looked to blunt the three-pronged Brazilian attack of the visitors. It was a job that was done well, but, unfortunately, Gamba could not get the goal they so richly-deserved to win this game and it ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Gamba took control of the game from the get-go and in the 7th minute, after a smart passing move down the left Takashi Usami stung the fingers of goalkeeper Go Hatano on his right post. A similar pattern was seen in the 20th minute as Shinya Yajima took the ball in his own half and burst forward, sending a pass out to the left before the cross came if got Leandro Pereira to scuff at, when it looked easier to score.

No score at the break and the away team were being easily contained, but they almost managed a breakthrough just after half time as a corner was half-cleared and Ryoya Ogawa send in a long-distance, first-time shot that hit a post! 22 minutes into the second period the unlikely head of Fujiharu got on the end of a cross and, again, the away 'keeper was equal to it as he frustrated Gamba's efforts again.

It was Tiago Alves' turn next as he took a free kick and, with everyone expecting a cross into the box, he blasted at goal and caught the 'keeper unawares, but was just over. Gambe almost regretted missing their multiple chances when, in the 90th minute, a game of head tennis saw the ball finally fall kindly to Kyosuke Tagawa, but while advancing well, his final shot did not even force a save from Masaaki Higashiguchi, when he really could have won the game for the visitors.

Team - Higashiguchi, Miura, Shoji, Kim, Onose, Fujiharu (Yanagisawa, 73), Yamamoto (Tiago Alves, 81), Kurata (Ideguchi, 70), Yajima (Okuno, 81), Leandro Pereira, Usami (Yamami, 70)
