Levain Cup Quarter Final

Gamba Osaka - playing a very young and inexperienced squad, especially in the 1st leg - succumbed to a full strength Yokohama F・Marinos over two legs of this tie, with manager Tsuneyasu Miyamoto obviously putting priority on the league in the coming weeks. There were a plethora of Under-21 player in the squad today, with Gamba taking the encouragement of playing youngsters in this tournament to a new level! With arguably not a single 1st XI starter playing tonight, and up against a full strength opposition this game was only ever going one way and the end result was a disappointment, but the game gave more experience to Gamba's ever-improving youngsters. The future is bright for Gamba with players like Hiroki Noda, Mizuki Ichimaru, Takahiro Ko, Kazunara Ichimi, Leo Takae and Keito Nakamura getting game time.

2nd leg, September 9th, away F・Marinos 3-1 Gamba

Once again Gamba manager Miyamoto fielded a very changed team, giving goalkeeper Ryota Suzuki a debut between the sticks, and Kazunari Ichimi the start up front. The game was probably seen as a formality by Gamba, and the most important part may well have been getting Yasuyuki Konno another start as he approaches full fitness for the coming league games. Despite plenty of play and not looking like a team that were 4-0 down and with no hope, it was the home team who extended their aggregate lead in the 12th minute, extinguishing any slight hope that Gamba would bring a miracle to the evening! After a bright start, some Gamba fan may have thought the four-goal comeback was possible if an early goal was found, but that hope was soon nipped in the bud by the opener for the home team.

Sho Ito then banged another nail in the coffin of Gamba dispatching a penalty kick to make it 2-0, and 6-0 on aggregate. Even then there was still time to pull a goal back through Ichimi, who pounced on a defensive error by F•Marinos to grab a consolation goal, before Ito added another to end the tie.
