game of this but they had given their hosts too much advantage by
then. After the early capitulation, the away team controlled large
parts of the game with their passing skills and movement around the
field but could not quite get the finish that might have brought them
back into the game and made the result a more fair reflection of play.
Yoshifumi Kashiwa opened the scoring in under two minutes when he took
pass in the channel after the half-cleared ball fell kindly for the
Sanfrecce attack. A lucky break which buoyed the home team, but there
was nothing lucky about the second goal, as Kosei Shibasaki unleashed
a rocket from distance that gave Gamba 'keeper Masaaki Higashiguchi
absolutely no chance, and put the home team 2-0 up before there were
six-and-a-half minutes on the clock.
Once Sanfrecce had their two-goal start Gamba got much more into the
game but lacked any bite up front. Around the half-hour mark Ademilson
had two bites of the cherry after controlling a long ball over the top
from Yasuhito Endo, but the Brazilian striker could not finish. Next
Shu Kurata was denied by the 'keeper's body as he smothered a shot
that fell to early substitute Shinya Yajima, but this effort was
blocked also and Gamba went in at the break 2-0 down.
Six minutes into the 2nd half Gamba were unlucky again as they tried
to get back into the match when Yajima curled a superb shot onto the
bar with the 'keeper helpless but the overwhelming percentage of
possession that Gamba were getting was not being turned into goals. As
the game wore on Gamba committed more and more forward as they looked
to salvage something from the game and were caught out on the
counter-attack as they poured forward with Hayao Kawabe wrong-footing
Higashiguchi as he shot from the edge of the area for Sanfrecce's
Encouraging signs, but Gamba must improve in defence and stop giving
goals away. Only then will their possession count and the confidence
will grow as they score goals and win points.
