The starting XI saw Akira Takagi and Ryotaro Meshino as the young but dynamic duo up front, while goalkeeper Mizuki Hayashi also got the start. Later in the game Gamba fans were also treated to the first "top team" appearance of J3 Under-23 team starter Ren Shibamoto.
Hayashi was soon in action to palm away a Ryo Nagai header from an outswinging corner, while Takahiro Ko couldn't quite steer his header on target at the other end, as half chances fell to both teams but none were converted and the match remained scoreless at the half time whistle.
Nagai was denied again after the restart when Gamba 'keeper Hayashi made an uncharacteristic error and gifted the ball to a Yamaga striker, but made amends with the save when the shot came. With chances at both ends next came the experienced heads of Yasuyuki Konno and Yasuhito Endo combining to find space for Meshino to unleash a shot that stung the 'keeper's hands.
The away team continued to run the game and it was Konno himself next who almost got on the end of a deep Endo cross, but failed to connect as the ball fell from a difficult angle and then Meshino almost gave Gamba the late win when he managed to find space among five defenders to unleash a shot that was saved down low by the acrobatic goalkeeper. Somehow Yamaga survived and earned a point but Gamba moved into the knockout stages of the competition where they will meet V-Varen Nagasaki in a two-legged play-off to determine a place in the quarter-finals. Those games will take place on June 19th, in Nagasaki and then June 26th at Panasonic Stadium.
