[Preview] Kyoto aims for a season double. Gamba shows off their strength even on enemy ground
In the match against FC Tokyo, Gamba broke their bad streak with a penalty save by Ichimori, and kept a clean sheet for the second consecutive match, winning their first league match in six matches. There is no doubt that the super goal by ace Usami and the brilliance of their FC Tokyo angel put an end to the bad streak, but the three points also speak to the improvement of the team's strength, with substitutes Kishimoto and Alano involved in the second goal that sealed the win.
Gamba has stepped up its efforts to chase the top spots, but the players' eyes are now on the next match. "We just need to play one more match at a time. We're not thinking about winning consecutive matches," said Yamashita. Last season, when the team was doing well, they only focused on the match in front of them, which resulted in a winning streak, but in the match against Kyoto, they are aiming for a win at Sanga Stadium by KYOCERA, which will be their first league match.
"We know it will be a difficult game, but it's important that we win," said Head Coach Poyatos.
At Panasonic Stadium Suita, Gamba won against Kyoto, who were leading the league at the time, with goals from Usami and Humet, but both were the result of sharp counterattacks. Naturally, Kyoto will be wary of Gamba's quick attacks, but what is different from back then is that the team's strength has improved even further.
Ravi and WELTON have returned to the front line, and Abe also made his first start in an official match in the previous match against Shimizu. With such a strong team that even being on the bench is a fierce battle, we don't intend to stick to a counter attack alone in the way we play on enemy ground.
"I want to see what kind of posture the opponents take after the start of the game and then make a decision," said Head Coach Poyatos, but while he will base his play on ball possession, he will launch sharp vertical attacks if there is an opening. Fukuoka also said, "When you play only with your feet, the opponent's strong points will come out. I want to use the back well and pass the ball to the feet when there is space."
With Kyoto having hard-working ball hunters in the midfield such as Kawasaki and Yonemoto, no matter how things go, it is essential to be able to switch quickly and not fall behind in duels. "They also come back to take the ball back pretty quickly after stealing it, so we want to make sure it doesn't become theirs too soon. It's a game of what to do after we get the ball and what to do after it's stolen," said Yamashita, who is tough on both offense and defense, and is full of energy.
Meanwhile, Kyoto, currently in sixth place, has been a force to be reckoned with this season. In the previous round, they were behind second-placed Kashiwa three times, but managed to catch up each time, drawing 3-3. Two games ago, they comfortably beat FC Tokyo 3-0. Although ace Elias Da Silva Bataglia Rafael(RAFAEL ELIAS) was not in the squad for the last two games, the offense has scored a total of six goals, ranking third in the league in goals scored, but what Gamba should be wary of is Nagasawa, who scored his 50th J1 goal in the previous round. Fukuoka also expressed his wariness, saying, "Kyoto is making more crosses now," but the height of Hara and Nagasawa is one point that they must shut down.
Against Kyoto, who were promoted again in the 2022 season, it is time for Gamba to accelerate again in the summer, achieving the season double they have yet to achieve.
