Gamba started the game in their new 4-3-3 system, with Shuhei Kawasaki again given a start, alongside Patric and Takashi Usami up front. Kosuke Onose was played at right back in this formation, while Yuki Yamamoto, Yosuke Ideguchi and Shinya Yajima took care of midfield.
The game began in a cagey manner, with both teams feeling each other out to start the season, and it took until the 12th minute to see Masaaki Higashiguchi tested at the near post by a low shot. Usami came closest for the away team in a relatively quiet 1st half, forcing a save down low from a left foot short just before the break. From the resulting corner, Usami sent a long ball to the back of the area for Ideguchi to volley just over, with superb control - as he did last year with arguably Gamba (and J1's) goal of the season, against Urawa Reds.
The 2nd half began well for Gamba with Onose cutting inside from the left wing and unleashing a powerful shot that Daiya Maekawa in the Vissel goal could only parry away. Usami then saw his shot from a similar position also saved as Gamba turned the screw and looked for the opening goal, with another Usami attempt saved well by the home 'keeper to keep his side in the game just after the hour mark.Vissel started to get back into the game with 20 minutes to go and Kyogo Furuhashi rattled the bar, and then pounced on a passing error at the back to advance on goal, only to see his pass sideways not reach its mark as the Gamba defence breathed a collective sigh of relief. Minutes later, though Furuhashi did indeed get the breakthrough. Ryuho Kikuchi, Vissel centre back, crushed Ideguchi in the centre circle, but no foul was given, the ball falling loose to Hotaru Yamaguchi, who sent a pass over the top for Furuhashi to finish and give the game to Vissel.
