[Preview] A win will give momentum to the ACL2. Gamba will go all out to beat Nagasaki
In the 1st Leg of the ACL2 quarterfinals, Gamba struggled against Ratchaburi's solid defense, but Nawada's brilliance saved the team from defeat.
Substitutes Kishimoto and Nawada were involved in the goals, but the sense of unity, including among the substitutes, is also becoming a strength of the team that Head Coach has built.
Before the away match against Ratchaburi, where they absolutely must win, Gamba's first challenge is against Nagasaki in 5th Sec. of the Meiji Yasuda J1 J.LEAGUE 100 YEAR VISION LEAGUE Regional League. Gamba is in 4th place in the WEST after the previous round, but is only one point behind leaders Kyoto. Depending on the result of this round, they could rise to the top of the table, so Head Coach Vissing is fired up for a 90-minute victory, something they have yet to achieve at home this season, saying, "Above all, I am thinking about winning in 90 minutes, especially at home."
Gamba will be going all out as they have just three days between matches, but they have many players who are hungry for action, including Mitsuta, who made his first appearance of the season in the previous match, and Nawada, who scored his first goal of the season in the 1st Leg of the ACL2 quarter-finals.
Gamba has created many scoring opportunities in many games this season, but what is necessary to win is the strength to finish those opportunities. Egawa, who played for Gamba until the middle of last season, has been making his presence felt in Nagasaki's final line, but Nawada also vows to score consecutive goals in official matches, saying, "I want to score in every game, but I haven't scored in a league game yet."
On the other hand, it will undoubtedly be a game that requires the defense to remain on their toes. "I have the impression that (Nagasaki) has the drive to go forward, physical strength, and the speed to counterattack by making use of these," said Head Coach Vissing.
They especially want to shut down new Jamaican attacker Campbell Norman Odale(NORMAN CAMPBELL). "If we don't pay attention to risk management and how we lose the ball, he'll end up in front of the goal," says Handa.
This season's style is to continue pushing into the enemy's territory without fear of risk, so it is essential to be able to respond to counterattacks.
Nagasaki has been promoted to the J1 League for the first time in eight years and will be heading to Panasonic Stadium Suita. After a losing streak since the start of the season, Nagasaki has won consecutive games against Nagoya and Cerezo Osaka. They are now in fifth place, just one point behind Gamba.
Head Coach describes Nagasaki as "a team that you really can't let your guard down against," and it goes without saying that the player they need to be most wary of is Matheus Sousa De Jesus(MATHEUS JESUS), who played for Gamba for about half a year in the 2018 season.
Unlike his time at Gamba, where he played as a defensive midfielder, Matheus Sousa De Jesus(MATHEUS JESUS) now utilizes his physical abilities as a striker, earning MVP, top scorer and Best XI honors in last season's J2 League. He has been a driving force behind Nagasaki's promotion to J1, scoring the winning goal in the last match and providing two assists in the match before that.
As Nakatani said, "The Head Coach wants us to first stop them from crossing the ball," and if the team can work together defensively to prevent conceding goals, chances will surely come their way.
"We'll win here and go to Thailand on a good note" (Handa). With consecutive matches on the horizon, the players will be encouraged by the support of their fans and will be determined to win in the 90 minutes.
