Head Coach comments after the match
Head Coach Poyatos: "I'm very satisfied with today's game. I think we were able to play a high-level game as Gamba. And all of our players fought bravely against a good team. I think we just lacked a little bit of precision. In the first half, the opponent had the ball a lot, but we made up for it by facing them on the defensive side and were able to hold the ball where we could. However, we were pushed back at times, but I think they worked hard on the defensive side. In the second half, I think we were able to play solid GAMBA OSAKA football. We had many chances to score goals, but I think it was our ability to score those chances that made the difference in the game. I don't think there's any problem with Ishikawa's mistake. A GK's mistake like that attracts a lot of attention, but on the flip side, I want the FW to score goals where they can on the offensive side, so his mistake is no problem at all. I really think this was a great experience for the team, and I want to move this team forward even more together."
Q: You mentioned earlier that this was a great experience for the team, but I imagine there were some difficult aspects to this friendly match. With the league set to resume in August, what were some of the things you learned from it, or what kind of tries were good?
Head Coach Poyatos: "We will resume the league with a match against Kawasaki Frontale, but leaving that aside, what really stood out in today's match was the aggressiveness, the contact, the sharpness of the movement to the back, and the ability to inflict damage in the places where damage can be done. I think that the Gamba players had a lot to learn in these areas, and I think that will come in handy in the league. After all, they were the Scottish League champions, so they were really aggressive, and they put their feet in on the defensive side as well. And the players learned a lot about the intensity of the play, including the ability to bounce back the crosses, and the defensive side. However, I spoke to Doan the other day, and we said that this is the most crucial area where Japan is lacking. In Europe, they really play with a lot of intensity. He told me that this is something that you can't experience very often in Japan. So I hope that Japanese football, together with Gamba, can learn from these European teams the aggressiveness and intensity that they have to offer.
Q: "I think this was the first match against a foreign club since Head Coach Poyatos took over as Gamba's Head Coach. What is your impression of the Japanese players at Celtic?"
Head Coach Poyatos: "I know these players really well. I knew that Maeda is great at creating space and finishing individually. At the same time, I think Maeda is a very great player in terms of how he creates space. At the same time, the way he applies pressure at the very beginning is really great. I think the Japanese players at Celtic are really suited to English football. At the same time, Furuhashi is a very good player with agility and the ability to penetrate between the lines and finish, so I really want them to continue to grow and contribute to Japanese football. If Furuhashi comes to GAMBA OSAKA, he's always welcome and we'll keep a position open. (laughs)"
